Special! Katie Morgan and Gina Fiorile

This episode features Katie O’Reilly Morgan and Gina Fiorile of The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, New York.

Bio

Katie O’Reilly Morgan (Youth Climate Program Coordinator) and Gina Fiorile (Youth Engagement Strategist and current UVM student) work for The Wild Center (The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks) in Tupper Lake NY with the Youth Climate Initiative. The Youth Climate Initiative was born out of a student desire for youth involvement in the Climate Change conversation and impacts in the Adirondacks. This led to the creation of the Adirondack Youth Climate Summit, a 2-day experience where teams of students from area schools come together at The Wild Center to listen and learn from experts in the field through hands-on workshops and plenaries.

After which they come back together in their teams to create Climate Action Plans to bring back and implement in their schools and communities. Now in its 8th year, the summit has become an annual event and grown into a year-round program to better support student climate action. With the success of the Adirondack Youth Climate Summit, The Wild Center has been able to share our experience and summit framework with other organizations and schools to develop Youth Climate Summits across the country and world in places such as Finland, Vermont, Detroit, Seattle, and the Catskills region of NY.

This has led to regional recognition by three village board communities in the Adirondacks and by the Adirondack Park Agency for outstanding work by the Adirondack Youth Climate Initiative. As well as national recognition by The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy’s Climate Education and Literacy Initiative. Inclusion at the climate talks (UN COP21) in Paris, and a National Green Schools Sustainability Award for an Outstanding Environmental Education Program with a Proven Track Record of 5 or more years.
